CMOS Creates a New Research Foundation

CMOS is pleased to acknowledge the announcement today of a one-time grant of $60 million from the Government of Canada for CMOS to create The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences.

The Foundation established by CMOS will operate at arm's length from the Government.

The Foundation will fund research and modelling in the climate system and atmospheric sciences. This research and modelling will help to address the many climate, climate change, air quality and extreme weather issues facing Canadians. In addition to supporting Canadian researchers, the Foundation will marshal and develop the scientific capacity of universities and not-for-profit institutions to contribute to the environmental science behind these issues.

The Foundation will also accept grants, donations, gifts, legacies and bequests from others to support its objectives.

The Foundation will seek to:

  • channel and strengthen Canada’s scientific capacity to address climate change and air quality issues and to encourage this capacity to remain in Canada;
  • provide the scientific basis for a better understanding of the climate system, climate change, extreme weather and air quality;
  • provide the scientific basis for policies to address the consequences of extreme weather, climate change and air quality;
  • provide a better understanding of the implications of these sciences for human health and for the natural environment;
  • foster collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to research on meteorology, atmospheric science, air quality, climate and climate change;
  • encourage the participation and support of others, including the private sector, in climate and atmospheric sciences in Canada.
In today’s budget speech, the Government recognized the need for investment in climate and atmospheric sciences to provide the basis for climate change and air quality policy development, including both mitigation and adaptation responses. It also recognized the capacity of CMOS to play a crucial role in managing such an investment. The new funding will expand Canadian scientific expertise and foster research collaboration by Canadian universities and institutes.

More information will follow.
